Medicare has announced that, beginning January 1, 2011, all beneficiaries must be screened for cognitive impairment as part of their annual wellness visit, another component that will now be mandatory for Medicare beneficiaries.

Annual Wellness Visit (AWV), Including Personalized Prevention Plan Services (PPPS):

Your practice may wish to start providing the new AWV that's detailed in the 2011 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, which will earn you up to $175 per patient. The payment is in full without having to collect coinsurance or deductible.

CMS has developed two separate Level II HCPCS codes:

• G0438 - Annual wellness visit, including personalized prevention plan services, first (new pt) visit (paid at the rate of a level 4 office visit for a new patient).

• G0439 - Annual wellness visit, including personalized prevention plan services, subsequent (est pt) visit (paid at the rate of a level 4 office visit for an established patient).
